Based in Switzerland, composers and performers Arturo Corrales (Geneva) and Emilio Guim (Zurich) met while working in different projects with Vortex Ensemble. Their affinity for contemporary music and their versatility for music styles both as composers and performers, led them to create this program involving electronics and multimedia.
Both Arturo and Emilio grew up listening to rock music among other styles. Their programs show one fresh way in which contemporary music has expanded to incorporate rock in an organic way.
Born in Ecuador, Emilio Guim studied Jazz-Fusion at Musicians Institute (U.S.), Recording Engineering at Los Angeles Recording School (U.S.), obtained a Bachelor degree in Music from York University (Canada) and a Master degree in Music and Art Performance from Hochschule Luzern, Switzerland. In 2012 he received the Dr. Peter Zaparinuk Memorial prize, granted by York University in recognition for outstanding Contemporary Composition Achievement. In 2017 he received the Kompositionatellier-Berlin residence prize from the city of Zurich.
His main instrument is electric guitar, and besides composition and performance, his interests also include MaxMSP programming, sound design, free improvisation, music for dance theater and sound engineering.
He has released 4 albums of original compositions with his jazz-fusion band Lullaby North, wrote music for choreographies for York Dance Ensemble and Luzerner Tanz Theater, composed music for film and tv and produced many albums in genres from rock to avant-garde jazz. He is currently very active in the European scene of contemporary music. He is also a guest teacher at Hochschule Luzern for the Music School and also the Visual Arts and Design school.
