Electric Primitivo

Based in Switzerland, composers and performers Arturo Corrales (Geneva) and Emilio Guim (Zurich) met while working in different projects with Vortex Ensemble. Their affinity for contemporary music and their versatility for music styles both as composers and performers, led them to create this program involving electronics and multimedia.

Both Arturo and Emilio grew up listening to rock music among other styles. Their programs show one fresh way in which contemporary music has expanded to incorporate rock in an organic way.

Emilio Guim

Born in Ecuador, Emilio Guim studied Jazz-Fusion at Musicians Institute (U.S.), Recording Engineering at Los Angeles Recording School (U.S.), obtained a Bachelor degree in Music from York University (Canada) and a Master degree in Music and Art Performance from Hochschule Luzern, Switzerland. In 2012 he received the Dr. Peter Zaparinuk Memorial prize, granted by York University in recognition for outstanding Contemporary Composition Achievement. In 2017 he received the Kompositionatellier-Berlin residence prize from the city of Zurich.

His main instrument is electric guitar, and besides composition and performance, his interests also include MaxMSP programming, sound design, free improvisation, music for dance theater and sound engineering.

He has released 4 albums of original compositions with his jazz-fusion band Lullaby North, wrote music for choreographies for York Dance Ensemble and Luzerner Tanz Theater, composed music for film and tv and produced many albums in genres from rock to avant-garde jazz. Arturo Corrales

Arturo started from his childhood music and painting. He acquires a degree in architecture as well as a first music formation in his home town, El Salvador (guitar, keyboards, theory with German Cáceres and Joseph-Karl Doetsch). He concludes his studies in Geneva and Lugano : composition with Eric Gaudibert, Nicolas Bolens, Michael Jarrell, Nadir Vassena ; electroacoustics with Rainer Boesch, Luis Naón, Eric Daubresse ; orchestral conducting with Giorgio Bernasconi.

Price Edmund Pendleton 2004, co-founder of the Ensemble Vortex in Geneva, and Master of musicology in Paris VIII with the composer Horacio Vaggione. Of determinedly experimental conception, its work of creation is often inspired by ethnic and popular domains. Constantly attentive to the formal coherence of his works, to the control of their projection in space and time, he wants to facilitate the expression and the perception of a "livable and human" music.

Next to his activities of composer, interpreter and conductor, Arturo Corrales teaches the guitar and is a professor of composition and analysis in the Conservatoire Populaire de Genève ; he has also acquired a doctorate in musicology from the University of Geneva, with a very honorable mention and unanimous praise from the jury.
